Illinois uses a unified Circuit Court. The Circuit Court of the Seventh Judicial Circuit, Sangamon County, handles local felony and misdemeanor prosecutions. Springfield, Chatham, and Sherman do not maintain separate criminal municipal court dockets. Their police reports may begin with city agencies, but prosecutors file criminal and traffic matters in the Sangamon court system.

The office can be reached at 217-753-6674 and generally operates weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Case numbers combine year, case type, and a sequence number. The sequence starts over within each case type each year, so every segment matters when requesting a file.
Sangamon Court Search Without Accounts
The Sangamon Circuit Clerk records guide leads to a free portal that does not require public registration. Users accept the disclaimer, choose a search mode, and open a blue case number from the result list. Many entries can generate a photographed PDF for saving or printing. That convenience does not convert the online history into a certified record.
The clerk warns that online data is a general status and history resource. Ask for a certified copy when the disposition must be proven from the official Sangamon County court file.

Sangamon Criminal Records Before 1993

Sangamon Arrest Charge Versus Filing

Sangamon Problem-Solving Court Dockets
Three Sangamon County programs add a distinct path inside the same Circuit Court system. Drug Court began in 2010 and excludes misdemeanors. Mental Health Recovery Court began in 2015, and Veterans Treatment Court began in 2018. Shared public criteria include adult status, a Sangamon residence or sentence, qualifying clinical need, no violent criminal history in the prior five years, and willingness to participate.
Referral is followed by legal and criminal-history screening, clinical assessment, team review, and a voluntary agreement. The public docket can show court events and the eventual case outcome, but protected treatment or probation notes do not become a public dossier. Access Rules for Case Records
Sangamon County court access is governed by judicial policy and confidentiality law, not the same FOIA process used for sheriff or police records. Public online access excludes juvenile, sealed, expunged, mental-health, adoption, and impounded matters. Sensitive identifiers are redacted. A court order can also remove a matter from public view for a time. No result is not proof that no arrest or case ever existed.
Check the spelling, nickname, filing period, and case type first. Then call the clerk about public status or an archived file. Request the specific complaint, judgment, or sentencing order when that is what you need. A certified copy carries the clerk's authentication; a printed portal screen does not. Sangamon Public Defender Record Role
The Sangamon County Public Defender represents qualifying defendants appointed through the court. It is part of the justice process, but it does not serve as the public case-record counter.
